She is a mother, sister, wife, that little one is someone’s son, daughter, friend, niece or nephew. How can we turn a blind eye?

As we head into 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children from Saturday 25 November until Sunday 10 December, the theme for this year is “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide: leaving no-one behind.”

It speaks to the importance of ensuring an all-of-society and multi-faceted approach to fight gender-based violence.

To address this scourge we need to unite. During this time we need to stand together, showing we do not tolerate any violence perpetrated against women and children.

Gender-based violence has ripped through our communities and tearing lives apart. Over the last few months here on the West Coast we have seen how many women have fallen victim to violence, in many cases ending up losing their lives.

What is even more shocking is witnessing these perpetrators walking free. For many this brings into question the efficacy of our justice system.

What can we do to assist others having to endure gender abuse? Encourage them to report the crime and show support to the victims. Stand up for what is right to ensure a safer South Africa for all.
