Concerned about the effects of pollution on marine life, 11-year-old Bladen Pedro from Saldanha has made it his mission not only to collect rubbish but, in his own way, educate the community about the importance of keeping a clean environment and protecting marine life at the same time.

Saving the earth is the mission of Bladen Pedro.

The 11-year-old from Saldanha, now better known as the “super recycler”, has been collecting cans for the past two years, making a great contribution to ensuring a clean environment.

According to Bladen, seeing the rubbish along the beach and in his town really inspired him to do something about it.

Not to long ago Bladen took his collected rubbish to a scrap dealer and even got a few rands for his efforts. This got him thinking to involve his community and collecting all recycling items.

Bladen is asking the community to collect items such as cans, bottle caps, tins and more. His mother, Cassandra Pedro, is willing to collect the items for a good cause. “If everyone plays their part I see a beautiful future ahead,” says Bladen. His wish is that everyone makes use of rubbish bins, recycles and also become more educated on the topic.

Pedro says she is extremely proud of him for taking on this task. “It all started with him going to the beach, even on the coldest day. If he saw a plastic bag or bottle in the water he would run in, fetch it and throw it in a bin.”

She says her son is always concerned about marine life. “As far back as I can remember he has been worried about the impact of pollution on the environment.”

Again, Bladen is enthusiastic to make a difference and save the earth.
