A recent flare-up in break-ins and robberies has occurred in Langebaan.

According to Captain Tania Helfrich, spokesperson for the West Coast police district, an incident took place in Laguna Sands in Langebaan in the early hours of Thursday 27 June. Around 03:30 an elderly couple was attacked in their home by three men. “The suspects entered through the kitchen window,” she related. “The men tied the man and woman up and fled with valuables worth R88 000. No-one was hurt in the incident.” One resident said he heard about the incident and felt news of break-ins, robberies and murder are kept away from the residents, creating the perception all is well in Langebaan.

Another, Nicolene de Wet, said after burglars are caught they are only released again “because apparently there is not enough evidence. It is alarming that one hears nothing about how many arrests lead to imprisonment. I believe the public should be kept informed of break-ins and arrests.”

She believes no place is safe anymore, “not even Langebaan, and we will have to learn to do everything we can to secure our properties. Burglars are also taking more and more chances precisely because they know they can get away with it.”
