We’re smashing things up with a bunless smash burger that proves low-carb doesn’t have to be boring. Crispy beef patties, green bean fries and a generous spoon of chipotle mayo make this keto fast food at its finest.
Ingredients
For the burgers
• 1 kg ground beef, preferably chuck
• Salt and ground black pepper
Green bean fries
• 170 g fresh green beans or wax beans
• 2 tbsp light olive oil or flavourless coconut oil
• Salt to taste
Chipotle mayo
• 60 g mayonnaise
• 1 tsp tomato paste
• ½ tsp chipotle powder
• Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
Burgers:
• Divide the ground beef into two balls per serving, about 110 g each.
• Heat a large frying pan over high heat.
• When the pan is smoking hot, place the meatballs in the pan and press them down with a grill press, spatula or the bottom of a glass until they are thinner than 1 cm.
• Season generously with salt and pepper.
• Fry for about two minutes per side, or until the burgers develop a deep, crispy brown crust.
Green bean fries:
• Wash and trim the green beans. Pat dry with paper towel to prevent oil splatter.
• Heat a large pan with the oil over medium-high heat.
• Add the green beans and fry for about five minutes, stirring occasionally.
• Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to absorb excess oil.
• Season with salt before serving.
Chipotle mayo:
• Combine the mayonnaise, tomato paste and chipotle powder in a small bowl. Season to taste (add more chipotle for extra heat).
• Serve immediately, or refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavours to develop.
Tips:
Love cheese? After flipping the burger, add a slice of cheddar and let it melt over the patty.
For extra flavour, season the beef with smoky chipotle chilli and garlic powder, or mix a spoon of Dijon mustard and herbs into the mince before shaping.
