“Working with different students and seeing them grow academically is very rewarding,” so says lecturer Jocady White.
White is currently a lecturer at West Coast College at the Vredenburg campus and is teaching National Certificate Vocational level 3 English.
Even though she describes herself as an introvert, she shares a great love being around people. “Deciding on teaching was a challenge, but as I went further, going out to different schools, I realised that this is what I want to do.”
White explains that her job entails teaching and having contact time with students on specific topics, assessing tasks and tests and developing the student’s skills to prepare them for the outside world and the workplace.
To get where she is today, White started by completing her B.Ed degree in 2014 at the University of the Western Cape. She then went on to major in English and Life Orientation.
White believes that all lecturers and teachers should have strong communication skills, patience, ability to listen, and be able to engage with students and then to be adaptable, which are the fundamentals of teaching.
With many young people out there with big dreams to enter the teaching industry, White would like to motivate and encourage young people to go for it and reach their dream.
“There’s always a need for teachers. As I have said before, working, helping and teaching students is very rewarding at the end of the day. Yes, teaching comes with challenges, but it is what you make of it.”
