West Coast Kids, in collaboration with the Berlin-based dental practice KU64, presented its 13th Dental Health Project, which took place at a church hall in Paternoster from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 February.
The project was supported and supervised by a team from the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
For the first time they were joined by German boxing legend Axel Schulz, who accompanied the dentists to impart invaluable lessons about the intersection of sports and oral health.
Simone Jacke, one of the West Coast Kids founders, said as they embark on this ground-breaking partnership, they recognise the critical connection between oral care, nutrition, preventative behaviours and overall health and well-being. “Axel Schulz’s presence underscores the importance of dental hygiene even for the most elite athletes,” she said. “Through his teachings children will learn that maintaining peak performance and good health extends beyond the boxing ring to include diligent oral care habits.”
The project aims to empower children with the knowledge and tools they need to prioritise their oral health and overall well-being.
“Through interactive workshops and engaging activities the team fosters a deeper understanding of the link between oral hygiene and longevity, instilling lifelong habits that promote health and vitality,” said Jacke. “One of the hallmarks of our project is its sustainability and continuity.”
Year after year, the same dedicated team of dentists are welcomed, forging enduring relationships with the children. “Not only do the dentists bring their expertise and equipment, but they are accompanied by a gentle, patient-oriented holistic approach,” Jacke said. “When children get scared of their dental treatment the dentists switch their roles. The dentist lies in the chair and the child can play pretend-dentist, trying out holding a mirror, seeing the harmlessness and fun.”
She said after 13 years the children can’t wait for the dentists to return each year. “To them the dentists are not just there to tend to their teeth, they are mentors, role-models and dear friends. As we celebrate this milestone year of our sustainable Dental Health Project, West Coast Kids invites the community to join us in our mission to promote health and smiles.”
Jacke added that together a future can be created where every child has the opportunity to enjoy a lifetime of good oral health and overall well-being.
