Louwville High School’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) recently visited the Siyabonga Care Village as part of a Youth Month outreach.

Learners of Diazville High say there is no better time than now to help one’s community.

As part of Youth Month the school’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) visited the Siyabonga Care Village on Friday (24 June) to handover treats and toiletries as part of an outreach.

According to educator and the group’s coordinator, Sakuba Nokuzola, it is wonderful to see how inspired the learners are. “It is important for learners to give back to their community and it helps enhance the skills they need in the near future,” she said. “We are helping to equip them to learn to care about their community and others.”

Workers of the Care Village welcomed the donation and even gave the learners a tour. The learners visited the residents of Huis Isabella and had an opportunity to find out more on the daily running of the care facility. Huis Isabella Residential cares for individuals with severe profound intellectual disabilities is a 24-hour high burden care centre in partnership with the Department of Health.

According Lisakhanya Rhongo, Grade 11 learner and SRC chairperson, it was important for the student body to be active in the community this youth month. “We have been gathering the donation since last term,” she said.

“We wanted to buy warm clothing for the elderly of Siyabonga and we organised a talent show as a fundraiser.”

Rhongo added more young people in the community should visit Siyabonga to find out more about the important work they are doing.

“I learnt a lot today and I’m sure many more would want to learn about the projects and get involved,” she said.

This year’s Youth Month theme is “Forge resilience and pursue opportunities for a sustainable livelihood, today and in the future.”

It is a theme Nokuzola believes the learners are taking to heart.
