SA Netball and members of the Western Cape cabinet launched Netball Fridays in the lead-up to the Netball World Cup next year.

Netball Fridays are here. In the run up to the 2023 Netball World Cup Premier Alan Winde and Minister Anroux Marais launched Netball Fridays on Friday (10 June).

Together with Netball South Africa, the politicians took to the netball courts at Leeuwenhof in Cape Town. Netball Fridays encourages everyone to dress up in their supporter’s outfits every Friday to show their support for the SA team. The Western Cape will host the tournament next year.

At the launch Winde encouraged his cabinet to join in a friendly game of netball against some of the provincial players from the Southern Stings and Tornadoes. Netball South Africa and the board members for the Netball World Cup were also present to celebrate the day.

“We are very excited to host the 2023 Netball World Cup,” Marais said, “as this will bring renewed interest in the sport, but also an economic boost to the province. I hope everyone in the Western Cape will join us in building up to the tournament, and we will all come out in numbers to support our Proteas team in the tournament.”

Winde added: “For the very first time in the Netball World Cup’s history it will take place on the African continent, and we in the Western Cape will represent South Africa by hosting it. This is a massive achievement for us, and it was great to be a part of #NetballFriday today as we gear up for the World Cup.

“This event enables us to drive economic growth and promote private sector-led job creation. This is so because our tourism and hospitality sectors thrive during international events. We look forward to welcoming athletes and spectators to our province!”
