A dream came true for Mighty Sangoni when he became the 2024 SA youth boxing champion.
The Grade 9 learner from Diazville High School and boxer of the Saldanha Military Academy made the West Coast and his family proud as he was crowned the boxing champion over the past weekend.
Alongside other boxers he competed in the Elite and Youth National Championships from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 July in Durban.
Mighty told Weslander he felt he had achieved his goal and one of his biggest dreams. “It is one of the best feelings I have ever had, and this achievement I will take as a motivation to carry on with what I am doing.”
Representing the West Coast means a lot to this young man, with his goal of putting the region on the map. “I believe it will be while I am here,” he said.
Mighty lives and breathes boxing and, coming from a difficult background, he did not let that get in the way of becoming something great and working hard. “I had to come up with a strategy and fight the obstacles I faced. My strategy was to get into a sport that could take me far and bring success to my home and my family name.”
Ivan Dwashu, sports coordinator of Diazville High School, said he was extremely proud of Mighty and what he had achieved. He also expressed his gratitude to the Saldanha Military Academy Boxing Club and coach Thando Nkayi for the work they are doing for many of the learners of the school.
Mighty said he had many more goals he wanted to achieve. “As said before, boxing means everything to me and I already see myself as a world champion in the future.”
Throughout the year Mighty will continue with tournaments and will need funding that will cover his travel and equipment. Should you wish to help, contact Paul Haricombe, principal of Diazville High School, on 084 515 8564 or 022 714 1909.
