“The Bergrivier Municipality condemns the theft of municipal property and will take action against perpetrators.”

These were the words of Executive Mayor Ray van Rooy, who stressed that stealing municipal property can be equated to sabotaging service delivery efforts within the Bergrivier municipal area.

The municipality is deeply concerned about the recent spate of criminal activities.

On Monday (20 June), on arriving at work, a municipal employee discovered an iron grill/plate was missing from the Transfer Station at Piketberg. The item was eventually found later that day at one of the local scrapyards in town, after it was sold for an undisclosed amount.

“This is not the first time municipal facilities have been targeted in criminal ventures,” Van Rooy pointed out. “We are pleading with all members of the public and businesses to assist us in protecting our infrastructure and assets by immediately reporting suspicious-looking activities, especially over weekends. We ask that local scrapyards be vigilant and enquire before accepting and exchanging any items for cash from individuals, especially when brought in on a Saturday or Sunday.”
