National Marine Week is celebrated every year in the second week of October.

Its purpose is to create awareness of the maritime and coastal environments and the promotion of their sustainable use and conservation for the benefit of present and future generations.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Saldanha Bay Municipality, together with other stakeholders such as the departments of Education and Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, ArcelorMittal Saldanha Science Centre, Sea Harvest, West Coast Fossil Park, SANParks, the Transnet National Ports Authority, the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and Viking Aquaculture in collaboration with the Bivalve Association, hosted a special careers exhibition on Tuesday 5 October at Pepper Bay Harbour in Saldanha.

Thirty Grade 9 learners from Diazville High School were invited to participate in the focused exhibition.

The careers exhibition aimed to provide learners with the tools to succeed in selecting and obtaining training, ultimately to improve their chances of seizing employment opportunities.

The exhibition was designed to highlight employment opportunities at the Saldanha aquaculture farms and related marine and environmental industries.

Apart from the various information kiosks that were available at the exhibition, learners were also treated with a boating excursion to the nearby mussel farms in the Saldanha Bay Harbour.

The organisers would like to express their appreciation to all the role players and sponsors who made this event possible.

The event was successful and informative to all involved.
