Tjommie the cat was adopted from the SPCA in Darling this week and, according to staff, he is already nicely settled in his new home.

The Swartland & West Coast SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) needs donations urgently.

The institution needs tinned dog and cat food to mix with dry pellets to make the food more palatable.

Donations can be dropped off at the SPCA Kennels in Darling in Yzerfontein Road (next to the cemetery) at the SPCA Shop in Darling in Voortrekker Road (next to Village Vet), the SPCA Kennels in Vredenburg on the R45 Main Road (next to the dump site) or at the Malmesbury SPCA Shop situated at 18b Rainier Street.

In a press statement the SPCA pleads with residents who are struggling to take care of their pets by surrendering them to the nearest SPCA or animal welfare shelter, rather than to let the animals suffer.

It says being a responsible owner means “you will not sell your pet online or pass it on to friends or family, or give the animal away to a ‘good home’ when you can no longer afford to keep it.

“ There is no way to guarantee your beloved pet will be treated with kindness and compassion if the above route is taken.”

The SPCA is willing to accept all unwanted animals of any size and species.

If you are thinking of getting a pet please consider adoption, rather than buying one from a breeder.

Visit Swartland & West Coast SPCA’s Facebook page to view animals that are available for adoption.
