As the popular saying goes, “the only constant is change.” In today’s world this is more true than ever before, especially after the pandemic when many entrepreneurs and businesses alike are just trying to stay afloat, implementing as many changes necessary to keep their doors open for as long as possible. Job security is one of the biggest challenges faced, as many businesses see no other alternative than to cut their overhead cost by means of retrenchments, giving up office space or closing departments or branches that are no longer feeding into the bottom line.

That said, some have come up with alternative, some might say bold ways, to expand its offerings. On page 6 this week we report on the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment granting environmental authorisation to Transnet Ports Terminals (TPT) to increase its capacity at the Saldanha Port for manganese handling and storage, which will ultimately lead to economic growth for the region. This, however, has caused concern among environmentalists on the impact this will have, as the article states. It begs the question: how does one mitigate risk when communities’ livelihoods are affected?
