Junior Speaker of the Saldanha Bay Municipality, Taryn Cloete.

Taryn Cloete, a Grade 11 learner at Vredenburg High School, has been selected the new Junior Speaker of the Saldanha Bay Youth Council.

She said on receiving the news of her new position she was shocked, but also excited.

“I was very proud to be given the opportunity to take on this role as Junior Speaker,” said Taryn.

Her journey started when the teacher in charge of selecting the nominees for the youth council nominated her. “I was thinking to myself that this was a big accomplishment, and I was very excited to be part of it.”

Taryn proudly identifies her mother as being her biggest supporter and motivator.

“As an only parent she has always tried to be present in everything I do.”

About her new position she said she is looking forward to planning new projects, taking action and uplifting the youth of the West Coast.

As Junior Speaker Taryn aims to be the voice of the youth, representing them on various platforms.

She explains in certain respects the role requires her to be a referee. “As Junior Speaker you must be able to ensure all council members are not ignored when they are sharing their thoughts and ideas.”

One of the four girls in leadership in the Youth Council, Taryn says she is confident they will bring a lot of change and positivity.

As for the youth of the West Coast, Cloete encourages them never to stop doing the right thing.

“Always strive for success.”
