The West Coast can now boast its very own Interact Club under the wing of Rotary International.
Its introduction took place on Wednesday 26 May at Louwville High School in Vredenburg.
Interact clubs bring learners together who want to make a change and difference in their communities.
The Rotary Club’s past district governor, David Holtzhausen, explained young people know what the needs are in their community and just need the resources to take action.
Phindeka Mkumbuzi, a Grade 11 from Louwville High School, has been selected as president of the Interact Club at her school. She said she decided to join the Interact Club to do good and with the mission to make a change to her community. She is very thankful for the opportunity given to her. Holtzhausen says the learners are very excited and already have a lot of plans in the pipeline.
“Our main focus is to create a positive change,” Phindeka said. “One of our first projects is to start a vegetable garden at school so that we can donate it to learners who need it.” She added the club will also collect plastic bottles to recycle and raise funds, and much more.
By joining the Interact Club Phindeka says young people will learn communication skills, humanity and to find joy in helping others.
“It is fantastic to see the enthusiasm of these young people,” said Phindeka. “Because Interact Clubs are part of an international organisation they open doors to members in terms of engaging with others, locally and beyond.”
