As a veteran water sports enthusiast I have for many years been fortunate to live next to the beach in Small Bay.

For many years my favourite destination was the Slipway restaurant in Saldanha. In less than an hour we would paddle across the bay and tie up our gear at the Schaafma Jetty there.

The Schaafsmas were excellent caterers. We would paddle home thoroughly refreshed. The same could be said for the catering at the Beach Sailing Club.

Sadly, the doors of both the Slipway and Beach Sailing Club closed long ago. The Public Works department and municipality have been unable to lease these properties out. It is time they were both sold off through public auction.

On Saturday a bunch of Italian kite surfers pitched up and did their thing in front of the Beach Sailing Club. It would have been nice if they were offered some refreshment, but sadly they couldn’t be!

Alan Carnegie,

Saldanha

Response from the Saldanha Bay Municipality: The Municipality is in process to call for proposals in respect of the Beach Club property. The process needs to be compliant with Council’s policy for the Management and Administration of Immovable Property, the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and the Municipal Asset Transfer Regulations (MATR). These legal instruments prescribe a competitive process through public tender and proper public participation process to be followed.
