As in many parts in the country the West Coast has been ripped apart, with havoc caused by bad weather conditions that started over the past weekend.
Many people are warm in their beds, cosy in front of a fire, enjoying a warm meal and oblivious to the real struggles happening right outside their window.
This should make us think about the homeless and the fact that they are out in the streets with no refuge and having to brave the cold-weather conditions with an empty stomach. As we all know, colder days make one hungrier than in the warmer season, so let’s think about how they are feeling. We should also think about stray animals out in the cold and animal shelters and houses that have suffered structural damage.
Out of it all there is a silver lining; it seems the spirit of ubuntu is present all over South Africa and did not die out. For example, municipal workers are out and about doing their utmost to help clear the streets in the area.
Another example is the community opening their hearts and helping to assist Saldanha Animal Care without hesitation. With many more days of cold weather ahead it is time to not only care for your own, but lend a helping to those in need no matter how big or small. Ubuntu can still be alive and well.
