Uncut diamonds, unprocessed gold and drugs were found in the possession of a man who was travelling between Clanwilliam and Citrusdal.

A man (35) from Delft South in Cape Town was arrested near Clanwilliam in the early hours of Wednesday 30 November for possession of uncut diamonds, unprocessed gold and drugs.

According to Captain Tania Helfrich, a spokesperson for the West Coast Police District, the Rural Flying Squad received information someone was transporting illegal diamonds, gold and drugs in a white Quantum.

The vehicle was expected to travel between Clanwilliam and Citrusdal.

At about 01:20 the vehicle was spotted at the Kransvlei turnoff and pulled over.

All the occupants in the vehicle were requested to raise their hands.

“One man was, however, fiddling with bags underneath his seat,” Helfrich explained.

Asked about the bags, the man confirmed they belonged to him.

He was searched and police found 50 Mandrax tablets, 9,4 g of tik, 4,22 g of unrefined gold and 35 uncut diamonds in his possession.

The seven bags contained 10,144 kg of dagga.

The suspect appeared in the Clanwilliam Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.
