The annual Velddrif Mile Swim took place this year in Port Owen on Saturday 16 November.
In its 8th year the event took place at the Port Owen Marina. It is seen as an event many swimmers look forward to every year. Ranging across all ages a total of 150 swimmers took part in the 1,6 km and 3 km. In the 500 m fun swim, a total of 46 swimmers took part.
Lorika Melck, marketer of the Velddrif Mile Swim said the weather played a long nicely and describes it as one of the most beautiful West Coast days one could have asked for. What stood out for her this year was the number of children, who participated and did exceptionally well. “The event and the atmosphere is always so beautiful and colourful. People were in high spirits and, of course, the environment where the event takes place is always stunning.” Every swimmer received a medal and at the end of the day various prizes were given. One of the special trophies is the Ewald van Wyk trophy, which was awarded to Ann Flanigan. “The Ewald van Wyk trophy is in memory of one of our founding members who has since passed away,” Melck explained. “Ewald was very involved and helpful and we give a trophy every year for the person with the best spirit on the day or who wears the best costume. The winner is determined by the committee.”
Organisers thank each and everyone who helped to make the day a success as well as all sponsors, including the main sponsor Harcourts West Coast.
