Winners of the Diamond Coast Race Trophy from yacht FOMO: Dale Kushner (skipper), Cathleen Hughes and Antonio Matthews. Absent: Ian Coward.

The first ever Diamond Coast Race was a success. Presented by the Port Owen Yacht Club, eight yachts set sail on Thursday 21 March from the mouth of the Berg River at Port Owen competing for the Diamond Coast Race Trophy.

The race took place over four days and ended in Lüderitz, Namibia.

At the end of the day it was team FOMO that took the amazing trophy. According to skipper Dale Kushner winning an offshore event is a big achievement. The Diamond Coast Race more so, as it is a new event that will grow and likely attract the top sailors of the country.”

With an experienced crew Kushner said the race was exactly what they had anticipated. Highlights for them included bringing their yacht in from Cape Town to the starting point and spending time in the area. “For some of the sailors this was unique, and likely more will now be interested in this, coupled with its being an international race racing cross-borders to a unique destination, Lüderitz.

Kevin Webb, one of the organisers and skipper of Banjo, said the race went very well and they were happy with how the entire event turned out. “It was very good winds and the conditions were great. We also had a nice stay in Lüderitz and a good sail back. All in all we were very happy.”
