A fire that broke out at the Amawandle Pelagic fish factory in Laaiplek this morning (February 16) was quickly brought under control.
According to Capt. Tania Helfrich, a spokesperson for the West Coast Police District, operational equipment at the factory caught fire.
Neighbouring residents were alerted to the fire when they smelled smoke and noticed heavy black clouds hanging over the factory. Motorists passing by found staff outside the premises after they were evacuated. However, the fire was soon brought under control.
Tiana Fataar, a spokesperson for the Oceana group, the owner of Amawandle, confirmed to Weslander that no one was injured in the incident.
It is not yet known what the nature of the damage to the factory’s equipment is as result of the fire.
