Sea Harvest’s mainly female firefighting team has walked away with top honours at this year’s regional Marsh Mutual Risk Group (MRG) competition, marking a remarkable breakthrough in a traditionally male-dominated field.
The five female/one male member team emerged as the first predominantly female team to secure top honours at the event, which takes place annually.
The MRG competition is a rigorous test of firefighters’ skills, teamwork, and determination. It challenges teams to work cohesively in high-pressure situations, demanding precise execution of intricate rescue techniques and agility in grappling scenarios. Team Harvest Lindiwe from Sea Harvest, made up predominantly of women firefighters, proved that they have the mettle to rise to the occasion.
The firefighting profession has been characterised by a stark gender imbalance. “Breaking into a traditionally male-dominated field has been a monumental challenge for many aspiring female firefighters,” says team Harvest Lindiwe captain, Menora Klaaste. “However, this victory demonstrates that it is possible to shatter the glass ceiling and rewrite the rules in this profession.”
This historic win highlights the importance of representation in any field. “When young women see individuals who look like them achieving greatness in a profession like firefighting, it can be a source of motivation and encouragement. It challenges stereotypes and reaffirms that barriers can be dismantled,” says Cliffton Rajgopaul, Head of Engineering and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) at Sea Harvest.
Team Harvest Lindiwe will represent the Western Cape at the Nationals next year in Johannesburg. Terence Brown, Sea Harvest Managing Executive, says Sea Harvest is incredibly proud of this major milestone. “It should inspire organisations and communities to strive for more inclusive firefighting teams and open the doors for aspiring female firefighters.”
