The community of Elands Bay was recently plagued by housebreaking and theft, and stood together to fight crime.

Last month, Kevin Klaase (35) was on the run and police Sergeants Danville Joubert and Joffrey Lombard caught him with the help of residents of Elands Bay South.

He broke into three houses in Elands Bay, one of which was on Verlorenvlei Farm. Klaase was caught red-handed at one of these houses. At the scene, while trying to flee with the stolen property he dropped the items on the grass, leaving the scene empty-handed.

Residents and police caught up with him and Klaase was arrested on charges of housebreaking and theft.

All stolen property from one of the housebreakings was recovered.

Klaase was found with a Lenova notepad, apple iPhone and chargers, food and liquor. Stolen property from the other two houses is yet to be recovered.

On Friday 18 March the accused was sentenced on three charges of housebreaking and theft to eight years imprisonment in the Piketberg Magistrates’ Court.

This sentence was welcomed by the Elands Bay Station Commander Captain Errol Els, and the following members are applaud for the good work: Detective Commander Warrant Officer Martin Kruger, Detective Sergeant Gert Titus, Detective Constable Wildeano Kamfer, Sergeants Jeoffrey Lombard, Danville Joubert, and Constable Fatima van der Westhuizen.
