Various NGO’s along with West Coast Disability Forum (WCDF) and other partners celebrated International Disability day on Tuesday 5 December.

The official International Disability Day took place on Sunday 3 December. The theme for the day was “Nothing about us, without us” and also “inclusion matters”.

With about 380 people with disabilities in attendance, there was a health awareness walk through the streets of Saldanha as well as a talent show. Natachia Williams from Sisonke said the day was a huge success and everyone enjoyed it. “Everything went according to time and plan. From the ambulance services, law enforcement, the DJ, it was amazing,” said Williams.

Chrisna du Plessis, chairperson of WCDF, explained that this kind of event takes place annually, to bring awareness to the public. “We want to break the stigma of disability and show the community that people with disabilities can live a fulfilled life. This event is a highlight in the life of these members, it makes them feel part of the community.”

Du Plessis thanks all the organisations for their participation and time. She would also like to thank the Department of Social Development and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for their contribution and assistance.
