The assassination of South Afican National Civics Organisation (Sanco) leader Moses Matiso (32), who was gunned down on Monday 31 March, has left more questions than answers.
The social activist was shot and killed while cleaning his churchyard in Witsand. Police spokesperson Captain Lisa Munro confirmed two unknown men entered the premises and started shooting at Moses before fleeing the scene on foot.
She said police responded to a complaint about a shooting at a church and on arrival there found the victim with gunshot wounds to the body. He was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel, Munro confirmed. He was seen as a young, energetic civic leader and a dedicated community leader.
“On Monday 31 March he was brutally shot dead at his church, located on the corner of Mnga and Mnama Street, Witsand, Atlantis. This heinous act is believed to be linked to many criminal syndicates, which have been targeting him ever since he pledged to fight crime in our community.”
Reports that the young leader had received death threats could not be confirmed by police.
Munro confirmed Matiso’s death was being investigated by the Taxi Crime Unit and no arrests had yet been made.
