In an effort to help their community and help guide young people to a bright future the Military Academy in Saldanha is hosting various outreaches.
One of these projects is the HERO Bootcamp, which takes place from 29 September to 1 October and 20 to 23 October.
The project is spearheaded by the Department Industrial Psychology, School for Human Organisational Development and the broader Faculty of Military Science (FMS).
The HERO bootcamp focuses on Hope, Self-efficacy, Resilience, and Optimism. According to Dr Yolandi-Eloïse Fontaine 30 boys between 16 and 18 years old will be part of the bootcamp held at the SAS Saldanha Base. She said during the three day event they will have physical tasks, receive career guidance and learn life skills.
“The programme focuses on enhancing psychological capital and development of character strengths by focusing on four constructs: Hope, self-Efficacy, Resilience, and Optimism (hence the acronym HERO).”
Aside from the bootcamps the Military Academy is also collecting school shoes for learners in Middelpos and Diazville, who need them. The annual Trans Enduro is also taking place later this year.
During the Exercise Trans Enduro, students from the Stellenbosch University Military Academy will run, cycle and boat to raise funds for the Masiza community outreach programme. The students have community projects along the way.
This year the students will also give the local play park, next to the Hoedjiesbaai Hotel, a facelift.
According to Fontaine it takes a village to make these projects happen. She thanks all her colleagues and all the stakeholders that make this community programmes possible.
