Cyclists prepare to set off on last year’s Gravel Monster.

The second edition of the Boland Gravel Monster has been confirmed for Sunday 17 September at Welbedacht Estate of Schalk Burger and Sons in Wellington. It presents distance options of 150 km and 100 km and traverses some of the most beautiful hybrid riding terrain in the Boland.

Mountain bikes are welcome and the route presents a balanced mix of provincial and privately owned gravel roads, easy-riding jeep track and quiet tarred roads.

The 150 km event summits both the Bothmaskloof and Bainskloof Passes on tar, and they are followed by a rewarding mix of gravel and tar descents.

The 150 km event starts and finishes at the Welbedacht Estate (Schalk Burger and Sons) outside Wellington and includes the Bothmaskloof Pass in Riebeek Kasteel in the first half and Bainskloof Pass, 25 km from the finish on the outskirts of Wellington.

Riders can also enter the 100 km “Mini Monster”, which starts in Riebeek-West at the Allesverloren Wine Estate and completes the final 100 km of the 150 km Gravel Monster route.

The 100 km “Mini Monster” excludes Bothmaskloof Pass, but includes Bainskloof Pass shortly before the finish at Welbedacht Estate.

It’s a flat and mildly undulating run all the way to Bainskloof.

The 100 km Mini Monster presents a 1 300 m vertical ascent with 63 km gravel and 37 km tar, while the 150 km Gravel Monster encompasses 2 000 m vertical ascent with 85 km gravel and 65 km tar.
