On Saturday locals put their money on the ponies as part of the Malgas Lions Club’s horse racing derby.

The event, held at the St Helena Bay Community Hall, was a fundraiser in aid of the St Helena Bay National Sea Rescue Institution (NSRI). The institute is a volunteer organisation that saves lives on South African waters through rescue services and water safety.

Punters bid on the horse of their choice or other permutations were also made, for the various races, with the bookies. After the bets were placed the races were watched with many cheering their horses on. Some punters won big.

An auction was also held with various prizes up for grabs. Jolene du Plooy and Willem Spamer were the best dressed of the evening.

According to the Lions the event was a great success.
