“We have a massive sporting community in Bergrivier Municipality.”
These were the words of Ray van Rooy, Executive Mayor of Bergrivier Municipality, who mentioned that the Rhino Park Stadium in Piketberg was packed to capacity during the Bergrivier Rugby Cup 2022.
Approximately 2 000 spectators, players and guests visited Rhino Park Stadium on Saturday, 16 April, to watch their favourite local rugby club take centre stage at the Bergrivier Easter Tournament.
A total of 12 teams from all over Bergrivier Municipality, namely Porterville, Piketberg, Wittewater, Velddrif, Goedverwacht, Redelinghuis, Piket-Bo-Berg, Eendekuil and Voëlvlei, entered the competition to stake their claim as being the best in their division.
The tournament consisted of three divisions, Division A, B, and C. The winner of Division A (Mayor’s Cup) was Velddrif Rugby Club, whilst Zebras from Piket-Bo-Berg won Division B (Chairman Cup) and Flying Eagles from Eendekuil won Division C (Community Cup).
The best players on the day were: Curshwill Amos (Best Backline player from Mountain Eagles); Ruan West (Best Forward Player from Flying Eagles); and Fabio Africa (Best Player of the Day from Velddrif Rugby Club).
Van Rooy mentioned he is extremely impressed with the discipline showed by all the players on the pitch and could not be happier with the support that showed up on the day.
“The importance of sport in people’s lives cannot be overstated. It brings joy, hope and unites our communities. Sport is a healthy way of exercising and leading a balanced lifestyle, together with keeping young people away from social ills that lurk in society. It is my hope that this tournament will grow from strength to strength and inspire other young people to take up sport and support local rugby talent.
“We take this opportunity to share our appreciation to the Bergrivier Sport and Recreation Association for their partnership. Our gratitude to the staff working from the police, EMS, law enforcement, our colleagues at Bergrivier Municipality, the donors, the volunteers, the participating rugby teams and most importantly the fans both at the tournament and who watched online,” concluded Van Rooy.
The day was declared a massive success.
