The annual memorial parade hosted by the Air Force Base Langebaanweg took place on Friday 5 May at its memorial wall.

Two members who died in 2022, Sgt Gerhardus Arnold Visser and Cpl John Peter Swanepoel, were honoured at the service.

Visser served for 20 years and Swanepoel 27 years.

Chaplain Mandla Mtila opened the service with a reading and encouraged the families and all those attending.

He laid emphasis on love and how people need to look out for one another and support one another.

Mtila reminded everyone that the fallen soldiers had left a great legacy.

Rowin Human, son of Swanepoel, said his father had been his role-model.

The thing about his father he will always remember are his great jokes and his people-oriented personality,” he said.

“There is so much I can say about him and all the things he taught us. It is still unreal to me that he is gone today.”

Human said he regarded the memorial service as a beautiful gesture, and thanked Air Force Base Langebaanweg for the manner in which it honoured his father.

As a token of respect, families and dignitaries as well as other stakeholders also laid wreaths in memory.
