An opportunity of a lifetime has come the way of Deanté van Schalkwyk, a resident of Langebaan.
The 14-year-old, a learner at Curro Langebaan, has been granted the chance to join a select group of South Africa’s top-performing academic learners on a prestigious Academic Achievers Tour to the East Coast of the United States, presented by Travel and Sport.
He shared with Weslander that he feels honoured and excited to be chosen for this tour, as studying abroad and exploring the world has always been one of his biggest dreams. This is now checked off his wishlist.
“I found out about the opportunity around the beginning of October. My teacher handed an envelope to me and a few other learners in my class. At the time I had no idea what it was about and didn’t think much of it until later that evening while doing my homework. When I eventually gave the envelope to my grandparents and we opened it together, I finally realised what it was.
“My first reaction was that I experienced a bit of imposter syndrome because I couldn’t fully believe I had been chosen. I honestly thought it must have been meant for someone else. It took a while to sink in that this opportunity was truly meant for me.”
He looks forward to visiting Harvard University, having always heard about it on television and social media and knowing it as one of the most prestigious universities in the world. “Being able to see it in person feels unreal. Since this will be my first time overseas, I am also very excited about exploring New York City and experiencing it live rather than on social media. I am also looking forward to trying American fast food that I’ve only ever seen on TikTok.”
Deanté hopes to learn from the universities he will be visiting and gain a deeper understanding of certain topics that may not always be available or fully explored in South Africa. He believes this experience will broaden his perspective, expose him to different teaching methods, and help him grow academically, while also developing a better understanding of the world beyond his own country.
His mother, Marché van Schalkwyk, said that as a single mother, the pride she feels is overwhelming and deeply emotional. “My son being selected for this academic tour is not something I take lightly at all. It represents years of perseverance, quiet strength, and determination. Not only from my son, but from both of us. I have watched him grow through challenges, self-doubt, and moments where he questioned himself. To now see him recognised for his academic potential fills my heart with gratitude and tears of joy.”
To make this dream a reality, Deanté still needs R71 000, which will cover accommodation, transport, meals, and flights. “To help raise these funds, we are doing extra fundraising in my hometown of Darling, including selling braai plates and vetkoeke. We have also opened a BackaBuddy fundraising platform where people can support my journey. Every contribution, no matter how small brings me one step closer.”
