Dr Lesley Welman (63), a lecturer in the Faculty of Military Science at the Military Academy in Saldanha, received his second doctorate in the Department of Social Development from the University of the Western Cape on Tuesday 15 April.

Armed also with a PhD in Human Geography, Welman said his greatest drive in pursuing such an academic journey is a desire to contribute to the existing body of knowledge, adding to the solving of socio-economic real-world problems to make a positive impact on society.

“Research enables me to chart the unknown territory, uncover new knowledge and expand the boundaries of human understanding and perceptions. I am particularly grateful to my wife Rochelle for her endless encouragement and support throughout my academic career.”

“Without my family, including my three daughters Charné, Claire and Rachel, not to mention God’s grace, my academic endeavours would not have been possible.”
