As part of the ArcelorMittal Foundation’s Saldanha Science Centre mission to develop IR4 skills and activities for the learners in the community, they have designed projects to ensure they give all learners the opportunity to participate in activities to achieve this objective.

Siphosethu Legoabe (Dudu) is skilled and is responsible for the robotics interventions at the centre. Dudu is passionate in her endeavours to make a difference and has started a robotics club at the centre which she runs. As part of ensuring that all learners can showcase their skills with the best, the centre entered the Robotics Club into the World Robotics Olympiad.

In preparation for the international online tournament being held from Monday 25 October until Saturday 30 October, the ArcelorMittal Saldanha Science Centre hosted a mini-robotics tournament with six primary schools that took place on Saturday 16 October. The schools included St Andrews Primary, Noordhoek Primary, Masiphatisani Primary, Steenberg’s Cove Primary, Middelpos Primary and Diazville Primary.

The groups were judged on participation, coding and construction of the robots and the final test was programming the robots to perform certain functions on a set course.

Xavier Lawrence, manager of the centre, would like to congratulate all the participants.

“A special word of thanks to the dedicated Science Centre Staff, teachers and principals who attended the event.

“A big shout out to St Andrews Primary that won first prize, although all the participants were winners.”
