From a young age, photographer Tamryn Jae van Wyk (19) was a natural behind the camera.

This Saldanha resident fondly recalls the time when her mother purchased a small Fuji film camera and how she used to explore taking videos and photos.

Van Wyk started taking photography more seriously in 2017 when her parents gave her a proper camera for Christmas. She had already established Tamryn Jae Photography in 2015.

“For me, being a photographer, is not just happily snapping some pictures, collecting money and spending it on things I’ve been wanting. It’s simply a passion of mine that I really enjoy and would love to learn more about,” said van Wyk.

At the moment van Wyk’s photography focusses on birthday parties, events, weddings, couple photoshoots and more. One of her greatest highlights was her first seven hour long wedding shoot she did in December 2021.

Facing challenges like many others in this field, van Wyk says she struggled to choose the correct settings at the beginning of her journey in the world of photography.

“The wrong settings caused grainy pictures, blurry pictures, you name it. After staying up hours and hours doing research on how to correct my mistakes, I can finally say that I know how to work my camera, no matter what the location.”

While continuing her passion for photography, van Wyk has big dreams and would like to take photos for companies, their products and events.

“In that way I can gain exposure and experience along the way.”

She encourages young people to go for what they are passionate about.

“Work hard to achieve it and never give up. It is not easy, but perseverance is the key.”
