West Coast roads are infamous for accidents, and that was why it was such a comfort to see traffic officials on the roads this past Easter weekend.
Like many other residents in the region, I regularly travel between Saldanha Bay and Cape Town. I believe I am not the only road user who travels the R27, well aware of the many incidents and accidents that occur too often on this busy road.
Travelling on the R27 over Easter weekend (a notorious period often marked by death on South African roads) can be even more nerve racking then usual, but it was such a pleasure to see provincial traffic officers on the roads and their colleagues conducting road blocks along the road.
I don’t take it for granted that these officials work on days most of us spend enjoying our time with friends and family. I know many a motorist will complain about the inconvenience of these road blocks or how all public/governmental officials are skelms and corrupt, but I urge these naysayers to think of all the lives that could have been lost on our roads were it not for the hard work the men and women in blue do for us.
Even stopping to help motorists with car troubles (as I saw again on Sunday).
To me these officials are everyday heroes, and I thank every one of you, from the ones out on the road to the team back at the office, for their contribution to keeping road users safe.
Thank you!
