Minister Anroux Marais handed over R510 000 to 10 sport federations affiliated to the West Coast in Malmesbury.

Local sport federations are welcoming Minister Anroux Marais on her tour of the province to hand funds over from the department.

She and her team from the Department of Sport and Cultural Affairs (DCAS) were in Malmesbury Tuesday (19 April) to hand over part of the approximately R13 000 000 in support of 153 affiliated sport federations she will be visiting across the Western Cape.

As the sport sector has contained, adapted and is starting to recover, the funding is expected to assist the six district sport councils and affiliated sport federations with administration, development, capacity building support and ad hoc funding as well as major events.

According to DCAS it will enable them to fulfil their significant mandate of developing and promoting their respective codes and clubs in the province.

The West Coast region received its R510 000 slice of the funding at the Malmesbury Town Hall.

At the first official district cheque handover were Harold Cleophas, the Mayor of Swartland Municipality, Boffie Strydom, West Coast District Mayor and Gerald Don, the District Sport Council chairperson.

More handovers were done in the Overberg, Cape Winelands, and soon the Cape Metro, Eden district and Central Karoo will receive funding too.
