Moorreesburg High School opened its doors to its first learners on Wednesday (18 January).


With learner numbers on the rise schools have to make provision.

In 2021 Weslander first reported on the new school building for Middlepos Primary School, (“Middlepos school getting a new home in 2023”, Weslander, 25 February 2021).

As the new school year starts the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said completion of the new school building is anticipated for July this year.

Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the WCED, said Middlepos is the only primary school in Saldanha Bay offering Xhosa/English as Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT).

“Currently, learners and staff are accommodated in mobile structures,” she said. The new building will accommodate 1 860 learners.

Mzwandile Sixholo. principal of Middlepos, welcomed the news and said the new building will allow learners access to more facilities.

Developments are also taking place at Panorama Primary School in Vredenburg.

Merton said the brick-and-mortar replacement school for Panorama will accommodate 1 240 learners. “At present, the anticipated completion date is October this year,” she said.

Moorreesburg High School learners also stepped into their new school building on Wednesday 18 January.

The school, which accommodates high school learners from Moorreesburg and surrounding areas, is the first school in the area to offer Afrikaans and English Language of Learning and Teaching (English LoLT).
