The teams of Vredenburg Tennis Club are once again competing in the South Boland League in both the men’s and women’s singles divisions.
After the festive season, practice commenced in all earnestness at the club in preparation for the league matches, which started on Saturday 4 February.
The men’s 1st team, captained by Brian Barnard, are showing their mettle with an undefeated record in all their matches to date.
After initial losses by the women’s 1st team, women’s 2nd team and men’s 2nd team, each showed its fighting spirit afterwards with convincing performances.
Barnard is confident the men’s 1st team will continue their winning streak, after victories against Strand, Bottelary and Rekreasie.
Gerda Botha of the women’s first team is planning their comeback after narrowly losing to Strand, Rekreasie and Vlottenburg.
After suffering an unexpected defeat against Country Club, the women of the second team, captained by Janome Miggel and Anna-Mari Fitchet, were fired-up to win their next two matches against Strand and Bottelary.
After a loss against Worcester, which forced them back to the drawing board, the men’s 2nd team, captained by André Pretorius, trumped Brackenfell and David Samaai.
All teams were in a good position to compete for the finals with impressive performances against strong opposition in the Boland region.
The league ends on 25 March.
