All systems being marshalled in preparation for Monday’s national shutdown

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party are planning a national shutdown on Monday 20 March.

The party is calling on the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the end of load shedding, among other demands.

André Truter, Executive Mayor of Saldanha Bay, said in a statement while the municipality recognised people’s democratic right to protest “it must be reiterated that it is not a right without limitations.

“All disciplines within the public safety directorate of the municipality have contingency plans in place and will remain on full alert. We can not support anything that will jeopardise our already fragile economy.”

Police Major General Sizakhele Dyantyi, District Commander of the West Coast, confirmed contingency plans were in place and law-enforcement officials prepared respond to any issue should it occur.

“Suffice to say, we will be monitoring the situation closely and control it to minimise any issues,” he said.

According to Truter the Saldanha Bay area, including the municipality, will be open for business as usual on Monday. Many other residents have shared the same sentiments and said safety was everyone’s responsibility.

“We will never sit idle when there is any form of violence, criminality, intimidation or threats on our residents,” she said. “Communities are urged to report any form of wrongdoing, intimidation, or criminality with the police. If you experience any challenge in doing so, you can contact my office for assistance. Your safety is our main concern.”

Truter added that the public will be informed on developments as the situation unfolds.

Residents are urged to contact their local police station should there be any disruptions in their area and can also contact the Disaster Management Centre on 087 077 0837 which will serve as the hub for reporting incidents regarding the shutdown.
