We’ve all tried the dance challenge, but little do many know who the mastermind behind the Mnike TikTok dance challenge is, and that she’s a local from Langebaan.
Rozette Makka, a Grade 11 learner of Weston High School in Vredenburg, is the creator of the famous dance that went viral on TikTok worldwide. Everywhere one goes and the sound plays people instantly know the dance moves. Rozette started her TikTok account in February this year and uploaded the first video of the dance in April. The first video got 612 100 views and the second video with her friends got 2,6 million views.
She said she had always dreamt a video of hers would go viral, but she could not imagine the Mnike dance would be the one making it a reality.
On hearing the song for the first time Rozette said she made it her mission to create a unique dance and place her stamp on it.
“I practised and the moves came naturally, where there were mistakes I corrected them until I was satisfied. Hyped by my cousin I posted the video.” Rozette said she and her cousin took turns to see how many views the video gained, and as they climbed she knew something big was about to happen.
“Today there are many influencers doing my dance and I am so grateful. I did not expect it to go worldwide. I just get goosebumps thinking about it.”
The song falls in the amapiano genre. Rozette believes the genre has a big impact in the country as both young and old listen and dance to it, bringing people together.
Another dream Rozette hopes to see come true is making a TikTok video with influencer Nevaan Ferris as she has been a real inspiration to her, as she also wants to be an influencer one day. She also would like to share the screen with dancer and TikTok star The Junior King.
Still humbled to this day, Rozette feels the entire experience has motivated her and she is thankful to each and everyone who has done the dance and shared the love.
