Learners had the opportunity to learn a lot from various exhibitors at the Science expo.

The West Coast witnessed an extraordinary event from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 September.

It was a three day extravaganza that left an indelible mark on the minds of approximately 600 young Grade 9, 10 and 11 learners from the various high schools in the Circuit. The ArcelorMittal Foundation Saldanha Science Centre Careers Expo, held at the Freeport Saldanha Innovation Campus, was nothing short of a triumph.

With more than 42 exhibitors representing a diverse range of sectors this Careers Expo was the largest of its kind in the region. The event’s unique rotational model ensured every learner, approximately 200 per day, had the opportunity to engage with every stakeholder, fostering a holistic learning experience that transcended the confines of a traditional career fair.

Xavier Lawrence, manager of the Science Centre, said the success of this careers expo was not merely by chance, but “the result of meticulous planning, relentless dedication, and a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of our youth.” The driving force was the ArcelorMittal Foundation Saldanha Science Centre Team, with Dee-Lynn Carolus as coordinator, who executed the project with diligence and passion.

However, this achievement was not the work of a few alone. It was a collaborative effort that showcased the power of partnerships. The Saldanha Bay Municipality, represented by Speaker Olwene Daniels, opened the event with an inspiring message to the learners. A special word of appreciation to all other collaborators who had been part of the coordinating team, The University of Cape Town (UCT), Freeportsaldanha, Yes4Youth Genesis Hub and the Western Cape Education Department, represented by Nikki Gaika, who made it possible for learners to participate, making this event accessible to all.

“Acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the Department of Science and Innovation, the National Research Foundation and the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement is also crucial,” said Lawrence. “Their support elevated the event to new heights. One cannot overlook the heart of this event, the 42 exhibitors who shared their knowledge, experiences, and insights with eager learners.”

He said that the ArcelorMittal Foundation Saldanha Science Centre Careers Expo will grow bigger year by year, steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the youth are allowed to engage and explore with professionals.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation Saldanha Science Centre would like to express their deepest gratitude to all who made the event possible.

“We share a common vision, and we all have the interests and futures of our learners at heart,” Lawrence said. “Together, we will continue to unlock futures and empower the next generation. The path ahead is bright, and with such dedication and collaboration, there are no limits to what our youth can achieve.”
