The beach clean-up at Laingville Primary School was a success on Tuesday 26 September. The day commenced with the opening address by Dr Jan Marx from the St Helena Bay Water Quality Trust (SHBWQT). The Chair of the SHBWQT then gave a talk on plastic pollution and indicated to the learners which of the items to be collected should be placed in separate plastic bags for recycling. Plastic bags sponsored by Unite against Litter and latex gloves supplied by the SHBWQT were issued to the learners. The beach cleaners, which included members of the public, were then divided into four groups that collected rubbish on Laingville beach. All the chock-full plastic bags were stacked at the NSRI station to be collected by the Saldanha Bay Municipality. The venture ended at the school where the main participants, the learners, each received a drawstring bag and water bottle donated by Enviro Serve. Boerewors rolls and cooldrinks were provided by West Point Processors. Young and old made a contribution to keep our beaches clean and played a role in keeping plastic pollution at bay.
