Ten officials from the Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM) attended a composting training session at the Langebaan Transfer Station on Wednesday 20 November. Facilitated by Aquila Environmental and presented by Melanie Ludwig from Zero to Landfill Organics, the session focused on equipping participants with practical tips and standard operating procedures for composting. Ethne Lawrence, spokesperson for SBM, said the training highlighted the proper separation and layering of organic waste, maintaining the right temperature in compost heaps, and managing environmental impacts like odours, pests and groundwater contamination. “This initiative supports the municipality’s preparations for the 2027 ban on organic waste to landfill,” Lawrence pointed out, “and reflects their commitment to sustainable waste management practices.”
