It was not just Valentine’s Day on Friday 14 February at Masiphathisane Primary School, it was also a day of appreciation, love and respect for the school’s dedicated principal René Joorst. Teachers, learners and parents joined forces to honour her with a special celebration, expressing their gratitude for her unwavering dedication and leadership. Joorst was the acting principal since 2018 and permanently appointed in October 2024.

The day was filled with music, dance and heartfelt words of thanks. Learners from the youngest to the oldest enthusiastically recited poems, wrote letters and sang songs, each performance a touching expression of love and respect for Joorst. The teachers, who experience her inspiration and guidance daily, also expressed their appreciation and praised her for her selfless service to the school and community.

Parents supported the initiative and voiced their gratitude for the way the principal motivated and nurtured their children. “She is not just a principal, but a mentor, a leader and mother figure to our children,” one parent said.

This special day not only highlighted the role of the principal, but also showcased the strong community that has formed around her. It was a celebration of unity, where children, teachers and parents came together to show appreciation for a woman who makes a difference every day.

Joorst was visibly moved by the surprise performances and words of gratitude. “I am deeply grateful for this incredible gesture. It is a privilege to be part of this school and community. We do all of this for the children; they are our future.”
