BLOEMFONTEIN – “Today’s matric learners need adaptability, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and a strong values foundation to succeed. The world is changing rapidly, and it requires more than academic knowledge – it calls for leadership, adaptability and the ability to make meaningful decisions.”

This is according to Thinus de Vries of Forvis Mazars, a long-standing sponsor and the official auditors of the Matriculant of the Year competition presented by the University of the Free State (UFS) and Novus Media.

He believes the competition helps develop these skills by challenging young people to articulate their achievements, reflect on their values and understand their role within their communities.

“It creates self-awareness, builds confidence and exposes participants to a higher standard of thinking and conduct, which remains valuable long after matric.”

Not only recognition, but also confidence and broader exposure

Two of last year’s finalists, Marné Koen and Amoné Verwey, agree participating in the final round gave their self-esteem and confidence a significant boost. Verwey says she learned to think on her feet during the interviews.

“The interviews helped me express my thoughts clearly and confidently. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realise that I have far more potential than I thought,” says Koen.

De Vries says, “Our involvement aligns directly with Forvis Mazars’ core values of excellence, integrity and people-centred development. We believe in the power of education and leadership as drivers of sustainable growth, and this initiative recognises young people who not only excel academically or in sport, but who also demonstrate character and community involvement. Our long-term commitment reflects a genuine investment in developing future leaders.”

He adds that initiatives like this are important because they help young people recognise their potential and move confidently into the next phase of their lives.

“In a challenging environment, positive recognition, mentorship and role models are powerful drivers of hope, motivation and leadership. Platforms like these show young people that hard work, values and involvement are genuinely recognised and rewarded.”

The firm hopes its sponsorship provides finalists with not only recognition, but also confidence and broader exposure at a pivotal stage in their lives.

“The experience and support they receive here can help them make informed decisions about their studies and careers, and approach the future with greater belief in their own abilities. Ultimately, we hope it plants a seed of ambition, responsibility and a lifelong pursuit of excellence.”

“I now have a strong support network”

Koen, who matriculated from Hoërskool Die Brandwag, and Verwey, a former learner of Hoërskool Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein, agree that they formed valuable friendships during the final round.

“These friendships have enriched my life in a meaningful way and made it easier, as I now have a strong support network of people who motivate me, offer honest advice and encourage me to keep growing,” says Koen.

Verwey recalls how the finalists laughed together and supported one another throughout the competition.

“I was able to start this new chapter of my life with peace of mind, knowing I had friends I could rely on and turn to for advice.”

The two accounting students say this year’s finalists should simply be themselves and enjoy the process.

“Don’t try to be who you think others expect you to be. Believe in your own abilities. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; rather see them as valuable opportunities to learn and grow,” advises Koen.

“This year’s participants should be themselves, enjoy the process and learn more about who they are. I would encourage them to remain true to their values when answering the interview questions,” adds Verwey.
