WELKOM – A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to approximately 653 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to 119 charges relating to the sexual grooming, exploitation, rape and abuse of three minor victims over almost a decade.
Christiaan van der Linde was sentenced in the Welkom Regional Court, sitting as a designated Sexual Offences Court, on 2 November. The offences were committed between 2015 and 2024.
The court imposed two life sentences for rape of minors and a third life sentence for trafficking in persons. The remaining sentences were ordered to run concurrently with the life imprisonment terms.
The case involved a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse, manipulation and exploitation in which Van der Linde used relationships of trust to gain access to vulnerable children.

Abuse of trust and prolonged sexual exploitation
The first victim was between 12 and 17 years old when Van der Linde gained access to her through a position of trust between 2015 and 2020.
During this period, he repeatedly groomed, sexually assaulted, exploited and raped the minor. He also subjected her to sexually degrading acts and used her to create child sexual abuse material.
The accused subsequently sold and distributed the material through a pornographic website.
Between 2022 and 2024, Van der Linde gained access to a second minor victim, who was between 11 and 14 years old, also through a relationship of trust.
He repeatedly groomed, abused, sexually assaulted and raped the child, while also using the victim to produce child sexual abuse material.
When the offences came to light, Van der Linde allegedly kidnapped and trafficked the child before attempting to kill both himself and the victim.
He also attempted to obstruct the investigation by damaging electronic devices and destroying evidence.
The court heard that he had further manipulated and instructed the second victim to create child sexual abuse material involving a third minor, without that child’s knowledge. The accused was found in possession of the material.
State opposes departure from minimum sentences
During sentencing proceedings, the defence asked the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
The state opposed the request, arguing that the offences were not an isolated lapse in judgement, but formed part of a prolonged pattern of predatory behaviour towards children.
The state prosecutor, Elma van Niekerk, described Van der Linde as manipulative, highlighting how he repeatedly exploited relationships of trust to gain access to his victims.
The state presented four victim impact statements compiled by court preparation officer Rosy Dube. These statements detailed the severe emotional and psychological trauma suffered by the victims and their families.
The prosecution argued that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify departing from the prescribed minimum sentences.
It further emphasised the devastating consequences of the abuse, stating that the first two victims had been left traumatised and suicidal.
Another significant concern raised in aggravation of sentence was the unknown whereabouts of intimate photographs and videos involving the victims. The state highlighted the possibility that the material could remain in circulation.
The court expressed shock and repulsion at Van der Linde’s conduct, particularly his exploitation of the victims’ trust.
The investigation, led by WO Jessica Saayman of the Welkom Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, revealed that the accused gained access to his victims through positions of trust.
Sentences reflecting the seriousness of the offences were subsequently imposed.
Strict restrictions also apply
In addition to the life imprisonment sentences, Van der Linde received the following penalties:
- Five years’ imprisonment for sexual grooming, sexual assault, exposing children to pornography, compelled self-sexual assault, child abuse and the creation and possession of child pornography.
- Ten years for sexual exploitation of children and the distribution of child pornography.
- Fifteen years for attempted murder.
- Five years for kidnapping a minor.
- Three years for defeating the administration of justice.
- Life imprisonment for trafficking in persons and each of the two rape convictions.
The court further ordered that Van der Linde’s particulars be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and prohibited from working with children.
He was also prohibited from possessing or using any electronic device while serving his sentence.
The sentence brings to a close a case involving years of calculated abuse and exploitation, while the whereabouts of the victims’ intimate images and videos remain a serious concern.
