Winter is fast approaching…

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for dangerous wind and wave conditions along the Western Cape coastline, effective from Saturday night through Sunday midnight.

Two successive cold fronts are forecast to make landfall, with the first arriving Friday afternoon and a second system following on Sunday.

These weather systems will bring strong to near gale-force south-westerly winds ranging from 50-65 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching 75 km/h along the coast between Cape Columbine and Plettenberg Bay.

Wave heights are expected to surge between 4 m and 5 m during this period, creating very rough sea conditions that will significantly impact maritime activities and coastal safety.

The weather service warns that the combination of powerful winds and dangerous swells will make sea navigation extremely difficult. Small vessels and personal watercraft, including kayaks, face serious risks of taking on water and capsizing in these hazardous conditions.

Beachfront activities are likely to face localised disruptions, while beach users and anglers are specifically cautioned about the risk of being swept off low-lying coastal rocks by infrequent large waves. Small harbours may also experience temporary operational disruptions.

Maritime authorities advise all recreational and commercial vessel operators to exercise extreme caution and consider postponing non-essential sea activities during the warning period. Those planning coastal activities should closely monitor weather updates and heed safety advice from local authorities.

The Western Cape coastline regularly experiences challenging weather conditions during winter months, making it crucial for residents and visitors to stay informed about weather warnings and take appropriate precautions.
