The Matjhabeng Municipality has expressed its concern regarding the acts of violence that occurred at the Ferdi Mayer Hall in Welkom on Friday, 27 October, involving eight finalists of the Miss Goldfields (MGF) pageant.

The entrants were rehearsing for the function that was scheduled to take place Friday evening when they were attacked by an angry mob of protesting municipal workers.

Two girls had asthma attacks. Eight finalists, out of 16 in total, were in the hall when they were attacked.

The pageant was re-scheduled and took place at another venue on Saturday evening.

“We are taking this matter very seriously and have initiated a thorough investigation. The safety and well-being of everyone who uses municipal facilities is of utmost importance to us, and we will not tolerate any actions that compromise their security or dignity.”

Tlali says the municipality extends its sincere apologies to the organisers of the pageant, the participants, and their immediate families who were affected by the unfortunate events.

“We understand the emotional and physical distress that such incidents can cause, and are committed to addressing the issue.

“We will work diligently to prevent the recurrence of this in the future.”
