Residents in Welkom are complaining about the raw sewage that is being pumped into the storm water drains at 455 Long Road. This is one of the some 20 pumps that have been situated in various spots in Welkom and the surrounding towns. This one in Long Road, apart from the odd one in Stateway, is the only other pump situated in Welkom. The sewer lines in Welkom are dysfunctional, as there is no proper working sewage plant. The water shedding adds to this problem and worsens the situation. The sewer lines need strong flowing water to function effectively. According to informed sources at the municipality, the situation is dire. Added to the water shedding at night, the water level in town is also turned down from 100% to 60%, which reduces the pressure thereby making the sewer lines ineffective.
