Heroic rescue demonstrates extraordinary courage and dedication to service

Two police officials attached to the Virginia Visible Policing have proven that not all heroes wear capes, displaying remarkable acts of selflessness and bravery during a life-threatening rescue operation.

On Saturday, 8 November 2025, at approximately 02:00, Sergeant Louis Frederik Botes and Constable Abraham Lombaard rescued a 63-year-old man from a burning house, whilst conducting routine visible policing duties.

The officers noticed that a residence in Calabria, Meloding, was engulfed in flames. Upon observation, they realised that an individual remained inside the burning structure.

Persistence paid off

The officers initially attempted to alert the occupant to evacuate, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. Without hesitation, the two officers devised a plan to gain entry to the property.

However, upon entering the yard, they encountered further obstacles as the doors were locked and windows closed. The officers ultimately forced the windows open and began spraying water through the openings using a domestic hose pipe.

The individual inside the house refused to cooperate with police and instructed them to leave, informing officers that he no longer wished to live. Despite this resistance, the two officers remained steadfast in their objective of preserving life.

The officers managed to force the door open and gained entry to the house, placing their own lives in imminent danger. Upon entering, they were met with resistance from the 63-year-old occupant.

Heroic determination

Whilst attempting to contain the fire, the officers simultaneously dealt with an aggressive individual. However, they were not deterred and remained focused on their primary objective—extinguishing the fire and safely rescuing the victim.

The two officers succeeded in rescuing the man from the residence. The victim was treated by emergency services personnel for smoke inhalation, whilst the fire was successfully extinguished by the officers.

A community member assisted by covering the victim with a blanket whilst awaiting emergency services.

This heroic act represents an extraordinary display of altruism and commitment that extends far beyond the officers’ everyday duties. Their actions demonstrate the highest standards of police service and dedication to protecting human life, even when faced with significant personal risk and resistance from those they sought to help.
